O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. She made it to the top hundred round after the judges praised her vocal ability. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judge. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and second lowest. It was a shock to the judges and they recommended that the public choose Melissa as the contestant with the best singing abilities. With consistently excellent performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would win in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest ever to win the show after the 7th September Finals of 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
